In addition to collecting water, the reservoir is used as a very popular tourist attraction, and is probably the most readily accessible place in the local area. It also attracts local joggers who compete in a race every Friday evening in the summer months. The path around Dovestones is well maintained, gravelled and relatively flat. Leading off the main circular path are others that lead up onto the skyline, off to
Chew Reservoir, and up towards the top carpark at Binn Green. Walking a full circuit of the reservoir can take approximately an hour. It is best to stay on the path and to avoid trying to follow the water’s edge as some of the banks are undercut and eroding. There are no restrictions on cyclists or dog owners, however care must be taken when cycling as pedestrians always have right of way. Dogs must be on leads when lambing season is on as the sheep roam freely about the hillside.

What you should bring with you:

- Basic trail repair tools (puncture repair kit, multitool)
- Map (if you fancy doing some exploring off the track)
Please note that there ARE restrictions to where you can ride at Dovestones, the only legal trails you can ride are the main path around the bottom res, the trail to the left of the two other reservoirs and the access road up the valley to Chew res.

Chew res is well worth the ride, fantastic views and a mega fast decent to the carpark. Check out http://www.mountainfeet.co.uk and have a look at Simons triple grooler challenge for the ultimate in chew res pain!
North West Riders and my company (Try-Cycles) have been talking to the ranger service and Peak Park about the creation of some new routes in this area and the possibilty of a change of status on some trails to allow access for mtbs. There are going to be some big changes in the Dovestones area over the next five years with the forestry work that United Utilities are planning to carry out, however this could work out well for mountain bikers as new trails potentially be incorporated in the re-planting regime. Keep your eyes on http://www.northwestriders.net for more information, we will also be forwarding progress on this project along with the proposed mtb development at Crompton Moor to Aaron to put on this site in the near future.
